Mary Lee was a 58 year-old widow when she travelled from Ireland to Adelaide with her daughter to nurse her sick son. After Ben's death, Mary threw herself into campaigning for women's rights. Never afraid to say what she thought, and bluntly, she wasn't always popular. She was instrumental in the successful campaign which ultimately resulted in SA being the first colony in Australia, and only the fourth place in the world to allow women to vote. Campaigners collected around 11,600 signatures on a petition that was 122 metres long. It was rolled and tied with a yellow ribbon. I’ve dressed her in ‘Suffragette white’. In massive British suffrage parades, white-clad women contrasted with the crowds of darkly dressed men. Green was symbolic of hope, purple of loyalty, and yellow of light and life. Part of an ongoing series of 'Local Icons'.
