Alan Todd

I am a contemporary painter and sculptor. The idea always comes first and then I look for a medium and approach. For instance, in the ongoing series Conversations With My Father, the paintings and sculptures were conversations that might have happened but never did. We lived on opposite of the globe over half a century, visits were few and far between and telephone communication most often was brief. He never embraced the digital revolution and we increasingly had less and less in common as he lost his sight and hearing and cut himself off from the world. Much was never said. The most recent sculptures make use of recycled timber and reach back into my cultural roots as I explore the idea of ancient worked stone and the loss of meaning for monuments still standing as stones on hillsides all over the UK.
