Water Runs Down Hill: Varna varnui akies nekirs (crows do not pick out crows eyes)

$1,235.00
This work uses hand spun and handwoven cloth to trace landscapes, watershed and blood lines. Weaving is a re-connection with Lithuanian textiles and my paternal Lithuanian heritage. ‘Water Runs Down Hill' references the winter creek at my childhood property, part of the water catchment for the Onkaparinga river. I have used materials connected to the land; wool, quartz, copper. I’m interested in the concept of ecology and its relationship to the body and to human domesticity. The work includes a Lithuanian proverb, ‘Crows do not pick out crows eyes’, using imagery from nature to speak about empathy. Quartz beads in the fringe of the work subtly catch the light, referencing crows eyes and moving water. My relationship to my childhood environment - stringy bark, clay, quartz- made complex and uneasy by my family story. Seasons cycle, water runs down hill, and I reconnect with my place within the narrative.
