Cave Systems

Cave Systems' is from the series of works Body Writing #2 made during 2020 and 2021. When I made Cave systems I was thinking about webs and about mothers, matrixes and environments in which life grows and thrives. At the time, a large golden orb spider was living outside my window, and it spun a new web daily. Cave systems was also made in response to reading my great grandmothers journals. I was curious about her life and felt excited about the prospect of interpreting her writing. What I discovered was that her writing wasn’t particularly personal, confessional or emotional, rather her writing was about the daily activities of her family’s life. I thought about how my mother, her mother and the mother in the journals creates worlds or environments. This work is a tribute to their ability to spin, shapeshift, cast, and continuously recast webs for life.
