Mel Heatley

I started making wearable art as a way to express my personality. The idea arose when I looked ‘out there’ and could not find anything that represented my values and beliefs. As a sensitive, deeply thinking person, what I choose to put on my body is inherently connected to my self-expression. My earliest influence, and constant source of inspiration is my connection to Nature. My secondary influence is Sustainability. I use a lot of techniques that require time, patience and accuracy. For instance, you will find a lot of stitching and weaving in my work. I combine natural materials and found objects, preferring to upcycle or repurpose where possible. Currently living in Adelaide, working from my home studio, I have been creating wearable art for over 25 years. I will soon undertake a Diploma of Nursing, which will build upon my decade of experience as an Aged Care Worker. I feel that the art and medical fields go hand-in-hand with a shared purpose of healing.
